A birthday and anniversary celebration! (Part 2)

Hello everyone.

So, picking up where we left off in Part 1

Sunday was a much more relaxed day. We decided we would head out for a wedding anniversary meal during the weekend as our actual anniversary was on Tuesday 30th May and come on, nobody wants to go out on a school night!

Mum’s visit and posh Afternoon Tea.

Last weekend my Mum came to Bristol to see us. As all of my family live in the West Midlands, I don’t get to see them as often as I’d like. When they do come down, I like to do nice things with them.

The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta 2016.

Last weekend was the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta 2016 at Ashton Court. My Dad and Step Mum were down for the weekend so we decided to go and make a day of it. The Fiesta is a free event that takes place every year and is one of the largest in Europe.

Discovering a new restaurant and starting the weekend in style.

Hey everyone. I hope you’re having an awesome weekend.

Karl and I celebrated the weekend last night but having a few drinks after work and going for some awesomely unexpected food.

First off was a couple of drinks in Bristol City Centre at a lovely pub called The Old Fish Market.

Wine
Hello Friday!

The bar is normally very busy on a Friday and we can’t get a table. We seemed to be lucky this time though as there was a little table right at the back of the bar in a little corner. What better way to spend a Friday night after a hard day at work.

After a few glasses of wine (and beer for Karl) we decided we needed some food. Karl’s been trying to convince me to go to a restaurant called Sticks & Broth for a long time I eventually gave in and told him we could go. We headed over to the restaurant, which is a Ramen Kitchen, asked for a table…and we were told they were FULL! Oh brother! After finally wanting to eat there, we couldn’t so we had to find somewhere else to go instead.

As I’d been looking forward to Asian food, I now HAD to have it. I completely had the taste for it so we tried to think of where to go. We turned a corner to head to another restaurant we knew and out of the blue, we saw this sign in a window…

Pho Sign
Ooooh, what do we have here…?

It was shining like a little beacon of hope at a time of food desperation. We then found a menu and our prayers had been answered…it was a Vietnamese restaurant right in the middle of town called Pho that we had never seen or heard of before…we headed inside.

The restaurant  was really busy (always a good sign) but we managed to get a table, yaaay! We nosied at peoples plates as we went past and it all looked and smelt amazing!

We started with drinks. Karl ordered a beer called Beerlao and I ordered a Phojito which was Nep Phu Loc (clear rice spirit), mint, lime and soda; it was lovely! Then it was on to the food. It all sounded amazing and there was so much choice. We decided to order a couple of starters to share. We ordered one from the summer menu which was called Gỏi cuốn. This was fresh rice paper summer rolls with shredded brisket, herbs, vermicelli, pickle and a hoisin dip. It was beautiful.

Starter 1
Yum!

We also ordered Nem Nướng. This was homemade pork and lemongrass meatballs with lettuce and herbs to wrap & dip. Again, it was delicious.

Starter 2.jpg
So good!

Both of the dishes were lovely. There were so many starters on the menu it really was a difficult decision but I think we made the right choice. To be honest, I think you could actually just sit and eat the starters instead of ordering a main! The dishes we picked had lots of flavour and the chilli dip we had the with the Nem Nướng gave it a nice little kick.

Before we knew it, it was mains time. Exciting! Now, we thought the starters had a large selection, you should have seen the mains! Wow! It was a tough choice but Karl picked Phở bò nấm trúng.

Karl's main
Looks good right?

This dish consisted of brisket, enoki & button mushrooms, creamy egg yolk, in beef broth. The broth is made by slowly simmering bones for 12 hours and it’s this authentic preparation that is key to it retaining all its goodness & developing its own distinctive tastes and aromas. I have to confess, I finished off some of this broth after I had finished my own food, it was so comforting and tasty. Oh, by the way, that leads me on to my dish. I had Phở Xào. This was  a dry dish unlike Karl’s that came with a little side of chilli that I poured over the dish.

My main
Tasty!

My dish was strips of beef with wok fried flat rice noodles, lemongrass, chilli and Asian greens and was served with peanuts & nước chấm (which was the sauce). The beef was sublime. It absolutely melted in my mouth and was a great combination with the noodles and all the vegetables in the dish. It was pure heaven!

What we had eaten barely made a dent in the menu. Take a look at the menu here.

We had such a great meal and will absolutely be visiting again. It will be great to try some of the other great dishes on the menu. I honestly can’t wait to go again. I can’t believe we didn’t even know the restaurant was there and came across it purely by chance. It was almost like the Room of Requirement in Harry Potter; we needed a restaurant and one just appeared!

There’s not only this one in Bristol, there’s restaurants all around the country so if you have one near you, check it out! You won’t be disappointed!

Signing off.

A rather relaxing Game Night.

Hello everyone and happy Sunday.

So, another weekend is nearly over (where do they go?!) and we spent our Saturday with friends playing board games.

Karl and I love a good board game. Our collection has built up over the years but we find ourselves looking to buy more and more recently. This is our collection so far:

A weekend with Mum and seeing Bristol Cathedral.

Hello everyone. I hope you’ve all had a great week and weekend. I’ve been really ill this last week so haven’t updated the blog or even left the house however all of that finally changed this weekend, yaay!

My Mum came down to see me this weekend and we decided to venture out. It was so lovely seeing her but also getting out and getting some fresh air having been stuck inside the house all week.

Being a tourist in my own City. Yay Bristol!

Hello everyone. I hope everyone’s had a great weekend. We had some friends down to visit who hadn’t been to Bristol before so we decided to show them around a little. This got me thinking…

I’ve lived in Bristol for around 8 years and I love it. It’s such a great place. There’s so much life, so many things to see and do and fun days out. There’s a lot of history and loads of old beautiful buildings and you know what…I’ve barely seen any of it! I’ve seen a few of the sights but there are some pretty cool places that I’ve never seen. Based on that, I’ve decided I’m going to see some of them and really explore Bristol.

I wanted to give you a bit of a history of Bristol, just the basics…
