A birthday and anniversary celebration! (Part 1)

Recently, it was Karl’s birthday and our second wedding anniversary. We decided to combine the celebrations into one fun filled weekend.

It was Karl’s day on the Saturday as he’d picked the activities. It started with a Mexican fiesta at the wonderful Wahaca restaurant. This chain is owned by the 2005 winner of BBC TV cookery show Masterchef. The first branch opened in 2007 and has grown and grown ever since. The restaurant specialises in Mexican-style street food.

The food here is so good. There’s plenty to choose from. We started off the meal with a bowl of tortilla chips and freshly made Guacamole (£4.50).

Chips

This was a nice little nibble to get the taste buds excited and the Guacamole was so good! This was all washed down with a refreshing bottle of Corona complete with lime wedge and then it was time to order.

For our meal we ordered the sharing selection called the Mexican Feast.

Food 1

So, starting at the very top and going clockwise we had:

  • Roast chilli quesadilla
  • Hibiscus-roasted aubergine salad
  • Four cheese empanada
  • Pork pibil tacos
  • Sweet potato and feta taquito

Food 2

  • Buttermilk chicken tacos
  • Grilled summer corn

As you can see, there’s a great selection of food on our table! The meal was incredible, there wasn’t a bad dish! I honestly couldn’t tell you my favourite part as it was all amazing. Also, included in the meal was a choice of two desserts, Karl had Mango sorbet and I had Churros y Chocolate.

Dessert

This whole meal as a set menu was £40. That was a great price for the quality and quantity of food. We had one happy birthday boy.

For the rest of the afternoon, Karl had chosen to play Pool. We had a table booked at the Allstar Sports Bar in the centre of Bristol for two hours. The bar has a number of screens showing different sporting events, a number of pool tables, snooker tables and dart boards.

Although we don’t play very often, we enjoy a few games of pool. Karl’s really good but it takes me a while to get into ‘The Zone’.

Some of the games were a close call…but Karl won every single one! It was so much fun though.

Karl and I

All together, it cost £16 for two hours pool.

All too soon the two hours had flown by and we headed to Bristol Harbour to meet some friends for drinks and food.

We had a few drinks including this awesome cocktail that came with a candy necklace…

Cocktail

… we had a catch up with our friends and a few hours later we headed for some food. (Don’t worry, it had been about eight hours since our Wahaca meal!)

We ended up in The Stable. It’s a bare-bones industrial venue that sells cider, pizza and pies.

Karl and I had the Cider Tasting Board. This was a bargain at £7.50.

We then chose our pizzas.

Karl menu

Karl had the West Country Porker. This was Bath Pig chorizo, tomato sauce, mozzarella, peppery rocket and a house Dijon mustard dressing.

Karl pizza

I had The Blazing Saddle. This was slow roasted pulled beef, dry-cured bacon, caramelised onions, roasted red pepper, tomato, mozzarella topped with sour cream and jalapenos.

My pizza

The pizzas were amazing! They were so full of flavour and mine was lovely and spicy. Our pizzas were £11 and £12.50 respectively.

It had certainly been a fun filled Saturday and a great start to our long weekend as a late celebration for Karl’s birthday. Bristol really is a great city for a day out and as our weekend continued, there would be more excitement to come…
