Our WDW 2017 trip – Day 11 – A rainy Magic Kingdom and a Polynesian night to remember…

Previous post: Universal Studios

Although it had been a late evening the night before, we were up bright and early for a breakfast dining reservation at The Wave in Disney’s Contemporary Resort. We’d really been looking forward to it, but we weren’t looking forward to stepping outside; the weather was horrendous!

We caught the Disney bus to the Magic Kingdom from our hotel, and jumped onto the Monorail to take us to breakfast. We were trying to keep ourselves dry as the rain was so bad. We ended up being at the Contemporary really early, so we had a little wander. We’d never been there before, so it was nice to have a look around. Eventually, we strolled to The Wave and they seated us, even though we were a little early. Our server was super helpful and explained what the breakfast buffet contained. We were so excited!

The Wave

The breakfast was mainly a buffet, but they do serve an à la carte menu also. We chose the buffet and we weren’t disappointed. There was so much food to choose from. There was:

  • Fresh fruit
  • Yoghurt Parfaits
  • Pastries
  • Bagels
  • Devilled Eggs
  • Ham and cheese Pinwheels
  • Egg Frittatas
  • Eggs Benedict
  • Scrambled egg
  • Mickey Waffles
  • Bacon
  • Sausage
  • Bacon Grits
  • Biscuits and my favourite;
  • Hash brown Casserole.

This list is by no means extensive, there was so much choice. All of the food we ate was absolutely beautifully cooked, the service was excellent and the restaurant was pretty quiet. We paid $58 for the whole meal and it was absolutely worth it. The Wave has now become one of our favourite places to eat breakfast, and we’ll be going back on our next trip.

We thought it would have stopped raining by the time we’d finished breakfast; we were horribly wrong! It was still pouring, but we had to brave the rain and get back to Magic Kingdom. We jumped on the monorail and headed back Magic Kingdom but once we’d arrived, we hid in the entrance tunnel under the railroad to shelter from the rain. We had a Fastpass for Pirates of the Caribbean, so we couldn’t stay under the shelter for long. We counted to 10 and then ran! We ran straight to The Emporium store. *Quick Tip* You can walk all the way up Main Street by going inside of the shops. Although the shop fronts all look like different stores, it’s actually all connected inside.

Eventually, we had to leave the cover of the store and head to Pirates of the Caribbean. The rain had cleared a little but we kept our Ponchos on. Even though it was raining, it was still warm so it was quite uncomfortable wearing a Poncho!

We rode Pirates of the Caribbean and we also managed Big Thunder Mountain whilst the rain stopped for a little while. It didn’t last very long and soon, it was pouring again. We took shelter in Frontier Trading Post, where we also purchased our first pin lanyard and pins; we became pin collectors, yay!

It was something we’d been considering during the whole trip so it was exciting to finally take the plunge.

When the rain had slowed again, we dashed over to Tomorrowland to ride Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress. It’s one of my favourite attractions and I was also wearing my awesome T-shirt.

COP

Upon leaving the ride, we realised it was lunch time and we were feeling a little hungry, so we grabbed a quick snack from The Lunching Pad. The snack was the lovely Jalapeño-Cheese Pretzel. It was really tasty! It had started to rain again so we made the decision to leave the park, for what would be the last time this trip. We’d had so much fun and many magical experiences at the Magic Kingdom during this trip. We were sad to say goodbye.

We caught the bus back to the hotel and stayed in our room until it was time to head out for dinner. We were going for a very special meal, one we’d been looking forward to since we started planning the trip… we were off to ‘Ohana.

We had to dress for the occasion. I had my beautiful flower top and Karl had his Stitch / ‘Ohana T-shirt.

Couple

It was a first for us, and we couldn’t wait to see The Polynesian. We arrived a little early so we took some time to explore the hotel and visit Trader Sam’s.

It’s such a beautiful resort.

It took us a while to find Trader Sam’s. It’s tucked away behind a rather nondescript looking door. Once inside, however, that all changed…

Once inside, the bar comes to life. Certain drinks set off certain events in the bar. I won’t ruin the surprises associated with the drinks, but let’s just say there’s a rather scary moment with this lady…

It’s such a cool place to sit and drink and super fun! The Cast Members really make the atmosphere here with their involvement too!

The cocktails and bar itself were wonderful. We had so much fun (and got a little tipsy).

Us

We’d had a great night already, and we hadn’t even been to ‘Ohana yet!

Menu

We could have stayed in Trader Sams all night, but the main event was soon upon us. We check into ‘Ohana and once we were called through, we were shown around the restaurant before being seated.

‘Ohana is an all you care to enjoy restaurant that serves different skewered meats. Our food started to come out pretty quickly and looked amazing. To start, we had Pineapple-Coconut bread and mixed greens salad with Lilika dressing.

Bread and Salad

Next was the pork dumplings tossed in a garlic and ginger sauce, honey and coriander chicken wings, noodles tossed in Teriyaki sauce and stir-fried vegetables.

Bowl

OH. MY. GOSH! The food was so fresh and full of flavour. I especially liked the dumplings. I could have eaten a whole plate of those things! Whilst we were still going with the dumplings and noodles, the meat skewers started to come out…

There was sweet and sour chicken, Szechaun Sirloin steak and spicy grilled shrimp. They were all prepared over an oak fire and tasted beautiful. My favourite skewer was the steak. It was one of the nicest steaks I’ve ever eaten, and it was cooked to absolute perfection. I can see why people try so hard to get a reservation; its exceptional… and the dessert was no different. The dessert was bread pudding with a caramel and banana sauce.

Pudding

It was amazing and absolutely lived up to the hype. The whole meal cost $134 and it was worth every penny. Although the service had been poor, I can’t fault the food in any way! I honestly can’t wait to eat here again on our next trip… fingers crossed we get a reservation!

After our meal, we headed to the hotel’s beach to watch Hallowishes, as you can see the  Magic Kingdom from there. We then caught the monorail over to the Magic Kingdom…

Monorail

… and caught a bus back to the hotel.

Ohana and Trader Sams has been one of our absolute highlights of the trip. What a wonderful evening.
